Step into Sport Conference introduces students to inclusive sport

28 young leaders from Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East School Sport Partnerships took part in our North Derbyshire Step into Sport Conference. The young leaders, joined by Sports Leaders from Chesterfield College, learned a great deal about social inclusion and how to take their skills back to school and run events of their own. Chesterfield was represented by Springwell Community College, St Mary’s Catholic High School and Chesterfield College.  Continue reading

Derbyshire to host 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup

Derbyshire County Cricket Club has been successful in its bid for Derby to be a host city at the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Derby will be one of five venues across England to host fixtures at next summer’s world cup.

The Club hopes the global sporting event will inspire young women across the county.  Continue reading

British Blind Sport launches new educational resource

British Blind Sport, the National Disability Sport Organisation committed to enhancing and improving sport and physical activity for people living with sight loss, has announced the publication of its fifth Educational Resource. British Blind Sport (BBS) supports and provides people with a visual impairment (VI) with the opportunity to participate in sport.  Continue reading

Dates for the diary! Active Travel deadlines and activity weeks

Active Travel is increasing in popularity in Chesterfield, as a number of schemes continue to be rolled out to to both primary and secondary schools. All primary and infant schools are offered Bikeability training, a scheme delivered by local cycle experts, Wheely Fun Wheels.  We also piloted the national Modeshift STARS at Westfield Infants and Brockwell Junior Schools. This scheme encourages schools to introduce programmes and initiatives to increase the number of staff and pupils who walk, cycle or scoot to school on a regular basis. Later this year we are also looking to introduce a Safer and Active Travel Ambassador Conference. Continue reading

IMAS Mixed Ability Survey

The International Mixed Sports (IMAS) would like to hear from you! They would like information on bringing together disabled and non-disabled participants in traditional sports and physical activities. Their survey can be completed by anyone, disabled or non-disabled, current participant or someone who is inactive.

The Mixed Ability model they use encourages social inclusion by mixing “able-bodied” volunteers, coaches or tutors who act as facilitators or helpers to guide players on the pitch. The model differs from the Paralympic structure, as it starts from the assumption that anyone, at some point in life, can experience a form of disability.
