Over 80 Silver Young Ambassadors from secondary schools in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire descended on the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for the 2015 conference on 13th November. Forming the basis of their work as School Sport Organising Committees (SSOC), the conference was invaluable as they look to plan and run events of their own. The Young Ambassador programme, organised and delivered by the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership, develops on ideas from the Youth Sport Trust and looks to build young people’s sports leadership skills.
Each SSOC divided roles among themselves including a: chairperson, secretary, media leader, reporter, inclusion officer and photographer. They are now tasked with delivering a School Sport Club, a Level 1 School Games competition and two Get Set for Community Action projects.
The Sports Leaders took part in workshops to learn how to deliver specific sports clubs and competitions, whilst the rest of the team focused on the media aspects of the SSOC.
The Media Leaders learned how to promote the work their team carried out using videos, social media, notice boards and blog posts. The Reporters and Photographers teamed up to create a magazine using the things they had learned on the day as well as interviews with Olympic volleyballers, Ben Pipes and Dami Bakare.
Here’s some examples of the work they produced:
