135 pupils from three Chesterfield primary schools took part in this year’s second Key Stage 1 Key Steps Gym event, this time at Brookfield Community School. Walton Holymoorside Primary brought 50 pupils and a whopping 85 came from Brampton Primary.

The activities were spread across numerous stations to keep the children active and entertained for the whole session. These included jumping from springboards and floor mat exercises, all designed to introduce the youngsters to basic gymnastics and movement exercises, preparing them for further physical activity.

Young Leaders from Brookfield assisted with and ran individual activities, contributing to the overall success of the event.

The next Key Steps Gym events are taking place later in the term at Netherthorpe School and Outwood Academy Newbold.

Springwell and St Mary’s dominate Table Tennis finals

Springwell Community College and St. Mary’s Catholic High School both won two events at yesterday’s Table Tennis finals held at Springwell.

There were walkover wins for Springwell’s U13 and U16 girls’ teams whilst the boys’ competitions in the same age groups were dominated by St Mary’s.

Despite only having three players, the St Mary’s under 16 team played well enough to overcome the plucky Springwell team.

Ayaz, St Mary’s U16 captain, said: “They were close games. We had to play well to come through. We’re already looking forward to the next competition.”

There was another win for St Mary’s in the U13 boys category as they swept Springwell aside with an 8-0 victory.

In the U19 section, Brookfield Community School triumphed over St Mary’s with the help of local division one player, Tim Denby.

All five winning teams will now progress to the county finals at the end of the month to face other winners in the local area.
