Nearly 300 pupils from across Chesterfield primary and secondary school took part in this year’s Quadkids event held at Mount St Marys College.
Quadkids is a new and exciting athletics concept designed to give more children the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the core disciplines of athletics. It is specifically designed to be inclusive, competitive, quick and fun. Primarily a team based quadrathlon competition where individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score. Quadkids allows all athletes to take part in a sprint, distance run, standing long jump and vortex howler throw.
The day kicked off with our first event, 50m sprint for the Year 1 & 2. Brampton Primary school were eager to get started, and after a practice run, it were the girls to begin the race. After a great run, Evie K took the first place followed closely by Grace. The boys were up and it was Scott who stormed ahead to win the race.
Meanwhile on the grass, the year 3 & 4 were preparing for the standing long jump. There were some fantastic jumps with excellent technique but it was Connor from Brampton Stings won the boys while Gracie T from Old Hall yellow took first place for the girls.
The year 5 & 6 pupils were beginning their first event on the field with the Vortex Howler Throw. Sam from Old Hall Yellow took first place with a whopping 32 metres whilst Lottie from Hasland Harriers won in the girls’ category.
On the track, the year 3/4 pupils were taking their mark for the 50m Sprint race. Grace D from Old Hall Blue stormed ahead to take first place with Nathaniel from Brockwell Badgers winning the boys race adding, “That was so much fun. I’m so glad I won but there were some really good runners.”
Back to the track event and next up was the 75m sprint race for the year 5 & 6. After some very close competition, it was down to video finishes to determine some of the races! Brampton Bees runner Ethan finished with the quickest time with Missy from Hasland Harriers winning in the girl’s race.
On the field, the year 1 & 2 were giving their all in the standing long jump with the year 3 & 4 competing in the Howler throw. First place winner Poppy from Old Hall Yellow described, “I didn’t think I was going to do THAT well in the throwing one but I just gave it my all and threw it as hard as I could, and it went so far.”
After a quick break we moved onto the distance running events, with the year 1 & 2 preparing for their 300m race. It was a tough run but Evie K and Scott both from Brampton Primary School took the first place.
It was a 400m race for the year 3 & 4 and a close one at that with Sam from Brockwell Badgers taking the win for the boy’s race. After an impressive set of races from the girls, both Faye and Scarlett from Brampton finished with the same time to take joint first place for the girls.
Our final race was the year 5 & 6 600m and the first set of girls were up. A fantastic run from Lucy of Brockwell Badgers who took first place, showing great sportsmanship by congratulating and shaking each competitor’s hands.
Mark Tournier, Partnership Development Manager of Chesterfield School Sport Partnership, announced, “It was a thoroughly enjoyable day at an inspirational venue, providing the opportunity for young people to experience four different athletic events and challenge their own personal best.”
We would like to say a big thank you for the support we received from the sports leaders and Chesterfield College leaders, as well as Mount St Marys College for hosting this event.
Some participants will be invited to represent Chesterfield and compete in the North Derbyshire Quadkids District Finals held in July.
