Sporty Spire exhausted after Santa Dash!

Our mascot, Sporty Spire, is having a well deserved rest after braving the cold this morning to take part in a fundraising Santa Dash, organised by Chesterfield College.

Rather than dashing, it was a steady walk for Sporty along the one mile course that circled the cricket field, went passed the Sports Centre before dropping down the steep hill back to the pavilion.  Continue reading

A jam-packed Autumn at the Chesterfield SSP

It has been a busy start to the academic year for the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership. We aim to ensure that young people in Chesterfield enjoy their experience of physical education and are supported to fulfil their potential whilst choosing a healthy, active lifestyle. Research calls for better opportunities for young disabled people

New research released on Wednesday 9th December highlights a clear need to engage disabled people in sport and physical activity at a young age.

Active Beyond Education? was set up to illustrate some of the ways to prevent a decline in participation as people move into adulthood. The findings will support educators, healthcare professionals and sport providers to deliver more accessible activities for young disabled people.  Continue reading

England Athletics Officials Course

Chesterfield Athletics Club are running an England Athletics Level 1 Officials course at Tupton Hall School on 6th February. The course runs from 09:30 – 13:30 and costs just £15.

Sporty Chesterfield student wins iPad in national survey

Jenny Morgan, a Year 10 student at Brookfield Community School, has won an iPad Mini 4 after giving feedback on one of her local satellite sports clubs.

Jenny is a keen member of the Chesterfield Junior Netball Club, a local satellite club run by Sarah Evans, Leadership & Physical Activity Officer at the Chesterfield SSP. The club, born out of Sport England’s vision to increase satellite clubs within communities, is growing in popularity.  Continue reading

Paralympic challenge ahead of Rio 2016

Sainsbury’s, ParalympicsGB and the Youth Sport Trust have introduced the Active Kids Paralympic Challenge.

By registering you will receive access to free resources that will inspire your pupils through Paralympic sport. Every registered school will receive a free Active Kids Paralympic Challenge equipment pack and 100 Active Kids vouchers.

And sign up before 6th January 2016 to be in with the chance of winning either: a ParalympicsGB Athlete school visit, a signed ParalympicsGB kit or a Youth Sport Trust Athlete Ambassador visit.

Temple Normanton receive National School Games Award

After showing an amazing dedication to physical education and a healthy lifestyle over the last academic year, Temple Normanton Primary School have been awarded the School Games Gold Mark. They become only the third primary school in Chesterfield to achieve such an accolade.

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.  Continue reading

Healthy living on the menu at Change 4 Life Conference

Over 100 Key Stage 2 pupils from 26 schools across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover took part in today’s Change 4 Life Champions Conference.

The event began with an introduction from Change 4 Life Athlete Mentor and former Team GB Volleyball captain, Ben Pipes.

The children then split into groups and took part in a number of Change 4 Life Champions modules to learn about Change 4 Life and how to deliver Change 4 Life Clubs.  Continue reading

Active Travel increasing in popularity

A recent article in The Guardian newspaper took a close look at Oklahoma City and how it overturned car culture in favour of actively travelling by walking or cycling. Other world cities, such as London and Zurich have embraced active travel and put less and less emphasis on cars.

Sustrans, a UK charity dedicated to active and sustainable travel, believe the health benefits are just as important as the environmental factors involved with ditching the car.

They state: “the best way to achieve the substantial health-enhancing potential of physical activity on a population level is if people can incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.”

However, most cities around the world have not been designed with walking, cycling or scooting in mind. So what can be done to increase active travel?  Continue reading

Work on cycle path gathers pace

Work to build a cycle path in Chesterfield between Queen’s Park and the train station has been given the all-clear and is now underway.

The path is being installed as part of the Chesterfield Cycle Network, long term project to link shopping areas to the train and bus stations, as well as the main residential areas in the town.
