Gold for Brockwell Badgers

It has been an exciting but tough journey during our qualifiers nonetheless we were delighted to welcome seven teams in the year 3 and 4 Mini Tennis Final held at Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club.

Mini Tennis is fun, great for fitness and for developing hand eye co-ordination. It can be played by all ages and abilities and this is a mixed boys and girls competition. Each individual boy will take it in turns to play their opposition whilst the girls play their double game. From there, they will alternate. Each point is recorded when there is an unsuccessful second serve, the ball is out of bounds or there is a double bounce. The player with the most points gained will win the game.

On the courts, we welcomed Brockwell Badgers, Beavers and Bears, Hollingwood, William Rhodes and Walton Holymoorside Aces and Whales. A strong competition that saw many close matches.

One teacher, from William Rhodes Primary School, said; “These kids absolutely love it today. They have learnt so many new skills and I think it is great that they get a chance to play against different schools who are all at different levels. There are some incredibly talented young people.”

The Chesterfield College leaders were quick to explain the rules to ensure the young players understood. Doubling up on each court, they recorded the scores and encouraged the players throughout. One of the Sports Leaders, Imogen, of Chesterfield College, said; “I’m really blown away with how good they are considering how young they all are. They are so polite and encouraging towards each other also, which is a nice thing to see.”

One pupil from Walton Holymoorside, said; “I’ve really enjoyed myself today. I tried my best and managed to win a few games, but there were some really good players which I lost to.”

After a fantastic final with incredible spirit shown throughout the day, Brockwell Badgers took the Gold for the Year 3&4 Mini Tennis Competition and will now represent Chesterfield in the Derbyshire School Games event on 11th July. We wish them all the best.

Thank you to the Chesterfield Tennis Club for a fantastic venue and the help and support of the Chesterfield College leaders.
