Running success for the Secondary Cross Country

Chesterfield School Sport Partnership - Senior Cross Country Event held at Mount St.Mary's College 2.12.16

Running success for the Secondary Cross Country

Over 380 runners from eight secondary schools took to the cross country circuit at Mount St. Mary’s College for the annual Chesterfield Schools Secondary Cross Country events.

There were eight races, each split by year group and gender, making for some close contests towards the finish line.

In each race the top ten runners had their times logged with the first three getting a podium finish and a bronze, silver or gold medal, and the rest contributing to the overall team points.

Brookfield Community School dominated the early races, winning the team event in the Year 7 Girls and Year 7 and 8 Boys events.

Hasland Hall Community School were not far behind in those races with runners coming in the top 3, and finally taking first place in the Year 8 Girls event. Jasmin who run the race for Hasland Hall said “I really enjoyed the course. I just pictured the finish line and aimed for it.”

The Year 9 Girls event was won by Elise from Outwood Newbold, followed very closely by Abbie who was the only runner to come from Whittington Green. “My school was off today but I didn’t want to miss the chance of taking part as I love running. I’m really glad I did.”

Never far behind were St. Mary’s Catholic High School, also regularly finishing in the medal positions. They took an overall lead by winning the Year 9 and Year 10/11 Boys events as well as the Year 10/11 Girls event.

Totting up the final scores it was St. Mary’s (pictured above) who took the overall team championship trophy for their consistent victories and top six finishes. Despite Brookfield regularly finishing in the top three, St. Mary’s edged them out to take top spot due to having a number of runners in the top six of every race.

As well as the overall team placings, individually there were some exceptional performances and some excellent times recorded.

At the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership we would like to thank everyone for their help, particularly Mount St. Mary’s College, the PE organisers from Parkside Community School and the Young Leaders from Chesterfield College who were fantastic marshals and hares for the races. Also congratulations to all of the runners who made the day a fantastic one.
