Six teams progress to Basketball finals day

The lineup for the 2016 Mini Basketball Final was decided yesterday as the final two teams made it through the qualifying rounds.

New Whittington Primary were the first team through on Tuesday after impressive performances, including a 34-4 win, saw them top the group at Springwell Community College. They were joined by Staveley Junior School who finished ahead of Hollingwood on goal difference.

It was a similar story in the second qualifier, as Old Hall Juniors dominated the event, with Walton Holymoorside A coming through in second, narrowly ahead of Brockwell A.

The final qualifier saw another emphatic performance from the winning team, this time Hady A. Putting out a strong team, they remained undefeated and recorded a series of convincing wins, including a 40-4 victory.

Ethan, one of the many scorers for Hady, said: “We did great! I want to win the final now.”

Spire Junior School also performed very well, taking the final qualifying spot ahead of Hasland Junior and Hady B.

Mr Davis, of Spire Junior, said: “We’ve done really well and played great but struggled against Hady A. It was like Space Jam! They were at least a foot taller than all of our players, but we still got six points against them which was an achievement.”

The final takes place at Netherthorpe School on Tuesday 22nd March.
