Sport England confirmed on 22nd February that School Games Organisers will continue to receive funding throughout the current parliament, securing the futures of the 452 SGOs until 2020.
In a statement issued earlier this week, Sport England’s Mike Diaper said: “We are delighted to be able to confirm that funding will be provided for the remaining period of the existing School Games Organiser awards (April – August 2016) and that that funding is also in place to continue the SGO roles through to the end of this parliament and the next spending review.
“This will be based on the existing model of three days per week, with funding at the same level (£23,800 per year per SGO). Current awards finish at the end of August 2016, therefore we will be writing to current hosts in the coming months to confirm arrangements and provide new award documentation. Thank you for your patience in awaiting this confirmation and further Government commitment to your work.
“Thank you also for your ongoing support of to the School Games; continued funding is a reflection of the value placed on the work of the SGOs by us all and in particular the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Department of Health.”
Sport England has also commenced a review of the School Games with the support of the Youth Sport Trust. The review will be forward focused, considering the future priorities of the Games in the context of the aims and objectives of the Government’s new sport strategy.
The basis of the consultation phase, which will include focus group work, will be the extensive responses provided to DCMS through their sport strategy consultation. A task and finish group will be reporting back to Government departments at the end of this summer with a view to start to implement any changes from the 2016/17 academic year.
Mark Tournier, Partnership Development Manager at the Chesterfield SSP, said: “We are delighted with the news confirming School Games funding will continue until 2020. This news, alongside the confirmation the PE and Sport premium will also be available until 2020 provide a huge opportunity for schools to develop young people through PE, School Sport and Physical Activity interventions.”
