After dominating the North Derbyshire Indoor Rowing and Rowing Plus competitions before half-term, Chesterfield’s schools put in another great performance at the Derbyshire Sport County Finals.
Each individual race and four of the six team races at this week’s Indoor Rowing competition were won by Chesterfield schools.
Springwell Community College, champions of North Derbyshire, continued their impressive form with victories in four of the six team races, as well as Jonathon Martin in the Key Stage 4 Boys’ Individual race.
This meant they were crowned KS4 champions after results from the boys, girls and mixed races were combined. Tupton Hall, another school that performed well at district level, finished second.
The tables were turned in the KS3 team event as Tupton narrowly edged out Springwell by 66 metres over three races.
It was a Chesterfield one, two in the KS3 Boys Individual race, with Jake Walton of Hasland Hall Community School finishing ahead of Alex McBain of Springwell.
Jake said: “I’m pleased with the result, finishing so far ahead but it was tiring.”
There was another victory for Chesterfield in the KS3 Girls’ Individual contest, as Chloe Wild, winner of the same event at district level, went one better to become county champion.
The KS4 Girls’ Individual race was won by Sarah Doyle of St Mary’s Catholic High School, their only victory despite a string of excellent performances.
Chesterfield was represented by two schools in the Rowability Special Educational Needs events, St Mary’s and Ashgate Croft School. Despite winning the North Derbyshire finals, Ashgate were unable to replicate their best form, finishing fourth in the team relay. St Mary’s also struggled for their best form, but a very impressive performance saw Jack Baston finish runner-up in the individual race.
