Healthy living on the menu at Change 4 Life Conference

Over 100 Key Stage 2 pupils from 26 schools across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover took part in today’s Change 4 Life Champions Conference.

The event began with an introduction from Change 4 Life Athlete Mentor and former Team GB Volleyball captain, Ben Pipes.

The children then split into groups and took part in a number of Change 4 Life Champions modules to learn about Change 4 Life and how to deliver Change 4 Life Clubs.  Continue reading

Active Travel increasing in popularity

A recent article in The Guardian newspaper took a close look at Oklahoma City and how it overturned car culture in favour of actively travelling by walking or cycling. Other world cities, such as London and Zurich have embraced active travel and put less and less emphasis on cars.

Sustrans, a UK charity dedicated to active and sustainable travel, believe the health benefits are just as important as the environmental factors involved with ditching the car.

They state: “the best way to achieve the substantial health-enhancing potential of physical activity on a population level is if people can incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.”

However, most cities around the world have not been designed with walking, cycling or scooting in mind. So what can be done to increase active travel?  Continue reading

Hasland Hall win Year 9/10 Girls’ Football Contest

Six Year 9/10 Girls’ Football teams from across Chesterfield took part in the final of our secondary competition yesterday.

After winning every game, Hasland Hall Community School were crowned champions ahead of St. Mary’s Catholic High School.

There were also teams from Brookfield Community School, Netherthorpe School, Springwell Community College and Outwood Academy Newbold.

Mr Leatherday, of Hasland Hall, said: “They’re a really good team. There’s a few that play for teams outside school but the whole team work together well.”

The tournament was played in a great spirit, highlighted by the players posing for a big group photo at the end. Well done to everyone that took part!

Work on cycle path gathers pace

Work to build a cycle path in Chesterfield between Queen’s Park and the train station has been given the all-clear and is now underway.

The path is being installed as part of the Chesterfield Cycle Network, long term project to link shopping areas to the train and bus stations, as well as the main residential areas in the town.

Rugby coach honoured by Lifetime Achievement Award

It is almost two months since the inaugural Active Chesterfield Sports Awards and our Lifetime Achievement winner, John Jefferson, continues to dedicate his time to local community rugby.

John has been an integral and enthusiastic part of the Chesterfield Rugby Club for over 20 years. Keen to teach people that rugby is a sport that can be played at all levels for many years, John set his sights on training young players, many of whom are still playing at clubs up and down the country to this day.  Continue reading

Key Steps Gym reaches almost 150 children

147 Key Stage 1 pupils from Brimington Infant, Speedwell Infant, Hollingwood Primary and Poolsbrook Primary schools made their way to Netherthorpe School for today’s event.

The sports hall was packed with excited children as they took part in 11 different activities, all aimed at introducing them to basic movement and gymnastics techniques. The activities included jumping from springboards, balance beams and floor mat exercises.  Continue reading

Olympic volleyball captain visits Spire Juniors

Former Team GB Olympic Volleyball captain, Ben Pipes, led a jam-packed IMPACT day at Spire Junior School yesterday.

A Sky ‘Living for Sport’ mentor, Pipes uses his experiences as an athlete to motivate and inspire young students. Opening the whole school assembly by admitting he was far from a fine sportsman in his youth, the volleyball champ encouraged the Poolsbrook pupils to take any opportunities that arose to find what they enjoy.  Continue reading
